People here have claimed they have photographic memory, but without independent verification, its kinda like the old Highschool meme of "my girlfriend goes to another school/lives in Canada, that's why you've never seen her." My interest in the mechanisms of memory is why I find the ME so cool and interesting while not believing it's caused by parallel universes or time travel. Almost all of the methods that memory champions use work from how the brain creates association pathways, and these same sorts of associations are responsible for most MEs in my experience. Learning about these sorts of techniques does, in my view, offer some insight into the ME. I would bet that they all experience the ME as well. Many have pretty average or even below average natural recall, but have an aptitude for the strategies and techniques that make competitive memory feats possible. Almost all competitors report that they forget stuff and get stuff wrong constantly in their daily lives. These competitors will all tell you that they use systems (like the linking method, memory palaces, or the hot new thing person-action-object) and don't have magically perfect memories. Events include memorizing entire decks of playing cards in order, or strings of binary numbers in the thousands of digits. One of my hobbies is developing my memory and I can do "party tricks" like memorizing a long list of words in order backwards and forwards in just a few seconds or memorizing the name, hometown and profession of everyone I meet at a party, but these memory athletes can do really impressive stuff. There are actually regular competitions for "memory sports" like the World Memory Championships and competitors there do amazing feats of memory.

This suggests that eidetic images are certainly not photographic in nature but instead are reconstructed from memory and can be influenced like other memories (both visual and nonvisual) by cognitive biases and expectations. In fact, besides often being sketchy on some details, it is not unusual for eidetikers to alter visual details and even to invent some that were never in the original. From the above linked article:Īs it turns out, however, the accuracy of many eidetic images is far from perfect. Perfect eidetic memory has never been demonstrated to exist, and even people with string visual recall get things wrong through similar mechanisms to the ones that likely cause the ME.

Anyone (including in these comments) who claims to have a perfect recall is lying, over estimating themselves, or they should go to their local research institution and revolutionize our understanding of the brain.
