The grid itself has some great fill and cluing. Reading the single letters in the red squares from top to bottom gives us RUBY LIPS, which are commonly associated with Valentine’s Day. (I solved in the iPhone app where the rebus squares had a red outline and looked like the screenshot from the web interface above after completing the grid.) So we have a rebus puzzle, where the red squares can be read as RED_, in this case, a red R. Lisa has not had a New York Times puzzle since 2006, but she’s back for Valentine’s Day 2021.
